Pilates exercise, performed in the U.S. since the 1920’s, is named after it’s inventor Joseph H. Pilates. Pilates had been a sickly child afflicted with asthma, rickets and other ailments that left his body weak and frail. Determined to become strong and healthy, he pioneered a system of building strength, improved posture and flexibility through a series of natural, low –impact movements. His method stresses pelvic stabilization and abdominal control through proper posture, alignment and constant elongation of muscles. He later used his method to treat immobile soldiers during World War I. Using springs from the hospital beds as resistance and assistance Pilates could mobilize and strengthen bedridden soldiers.
What is Pilates?
Unlike high-impact aerobics or heavy weightlifting, Pilates doesn’t stress your body to the limits in order to create bulky muscle. Instead, a regimen of focused and controlled movements is used to affect dramatic changes in your body. Your muscles are longer, leaner and stronger.
You move with ease and grace.
You stand taller, breath deeper and are more centered.
You build strength at the core of your body.
You build a stronger, more flexible back, a tighter, trimmer waist and deeper, more relaxed breathing.
You look better, you feel better, you are better.
Mind ~ Body ~ Health
Who can benefit from Pilates?
Pilates can help anyone. Runners and cyclist loosen tight hip flexors; golfers get a smoother stronger swing by working through their core.
Pilates no impact work is also perfectly suited to those rehabilitating neck, back and joint injuries as well as those with arthritis and osteoporosis.
The everyday person stands taller, stronger and without pain.
How often should I do Pilates?
For the fastest results 2-3 times a week is recommended.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable exercise clothing, that is not too oversized, which will make it difficult for the instructor to observe your form during your session.
*Socks are required in the studio. Jewelry, belts and belt loops can be restrictive, and it is recommended that they not be worn during class.
